Millions of people struggle with alcohol each year, yet most never receive support—not because they lack motivation, but because our systems are not designed around choice, dignity, or evidence. Traditional structures often rely on narrow pathways and stigmatizing assumptions that unintentionally limit access, discourage early engagement, and leave many feeling unseen. As a result, the people most in need of support often face the greatest barriers to receiving it.
The Choice Recovery Movement Framework was created to address this gap. Rooted in behavioral science, harm reduction, autonomy-supportive communication, and a full spectrum of recovery pathways, the framework reimagines how systems can reach and support people more effectively. Instead of replacing clinical expertise, it enhances existing programs by integrating research, lived experience, and practical tools that honor individual goals and experiences.
This mini-series introduces the core challenges that keep people from seeking help, including limited choice, pervasive stigma, and uneven access to evidence-informed tools. By breaking down the research and exploring real-world examples, the series offers organizations a clearer understanding of why engagement remains low—and how simple shifts in practice can dramatically expand reach and outcomes.
Throughout the series, you’ll also hear insights rooted in my personal and professional experience navigating the system. My background in social research, child advocacy, and systems-level policy work, combined with my own decade-long struggle with alcohol, shapes the frameworks and strategies I bring to organizational partnerships.
These perspectives illuminate not only what works, but why
certain approaches fail to engage the people they’re meant to
serve.
Designed for government agencies, nonprofits, treatment organizations, and community programs, this mini-series offers
a practical, compassionate, evidence-informed pathway toward modernizing alcohol recovery. Whether your goal is to
strengthen engagement, expand reach, reduce stigma, or
align your work with current research, the Choice
Recovery Movement Framework provides a roadmap
for building systems that meet people where they
are—and support them in ways that truly work.
